Surfs Up!

Yesterday, I didn’t get a chance to blog…due to the lack of internet service here and the fact that I was exhausted.  That’s a sign of a good vacation.  So yesterday was kind of a big day.  It’s the whole reason we came to San Diego in the first place.  Surfing!!   Nate and the girls were the brave ones, I watched from the comfort of the beach.   They took a one-and-a-half-hour lesson from a place called, “San Diego Surf School”, gee, wonder how long it took them to come up with that name?  Anyway, really nice, friendly people greeted us and showed us the way to the beach, where they would meet their instructor, Matt.

Once we arrived on the beach, they were each given wet-suits to put on and a surf board.  They were already looking the part!  Step one was to practice on the beach, step two they headed out onto the water.

Next, they headed into the water.  Their instructor helped each time with turning the board in the right direction, giving them a push along, then they were on their own and hoping to get up and ride the wave.  Kelly managed to do it on her first try, Megan was soon after, and Nate took a little bit, but was finally able to stand and ride one in.  Yay for all of them.  This was not an easy thing to do.  They all had such a good time trying.  I would’ve lasted 15 minutes and called it quits.

I wasn’t able to catch a picture of Nate riding on his, but he was thrilled that he went out and gave this a try.  He got a little bruised up, but said it was worth it.  I’d say the smiles on their faces in this next picture, shows just that.

We did get some time to lay out in the sun yesterday as well.  The girls got out their swimsuits and relaxed a bit before they surfed.  We have a nice pool area that is blocked by the ocean wind, so it’s really helpful.  Nice to get out of the wind once in awhile.

We’ve been taking a walk along the beach every day.  Yes, it’s windy, but still enjoyable.  I have learned a big lesson…wear a hat!  So you will see me in my hat quite often in the pictures, otherwise my hair was always in my face.    We walked out onto the pier yesterday.  That was fun and interesting.  They have cottages along the pier, which you can rent out…called Crystal Cove Cottages.  My brother Mark & sister-in-law Peggy stayed in one of these.  You can drive your car right on the pier and park in front of your cottage.

Once we left the pier we walked further down the beach away from our hotel.  We found green grass and some pretty bushes that looked like they had mini apples growing on them.   We were thrilled to see green and Megan took off her sandals to walk in the grass.

It’s been a nice trip so far.  The temperatures have been in the low to mid 60’s, which is still nice, but we are still wearing jackets because of this wind.   We are hoping for a day in the seventies so we can put on shorts and not be cold.  We heard it was raining and snowing back in Minnesota today, so we are not complaining.  Glad to have missed that!
