Once again, Nate and I and our group of friends, had our annual Vineyard and Winery trip. This summer we ventured west to Hutchinson, MN to the Crow River Winery. It was a beautiful summer afternoon for an hour long drive to a town that none of us had ever traveled to. Once we arrived, Nate & I along with Sheri & Kevin, hung out in the winery and enjoyed our first glass to sort of “wet our whistle” while waiting for the rest of our group to arrive. We were brave, cause we hadn’t even had the tastings yet, but we all made good choices and shared our glasses.
Once everyone arrived, we were guided on a tour of their facility by a wonderful worker named EMILY!! She was having a great time touring us around, because we asked questions that she had a hard time answering. She finally admitted that she had only done 4 tours and is still learning the business. We all laughed and put her at ease and she stuck with us for the rest of our day. She said she wished she could stay and hang out with us after she was done working. We are an enjoyable bunch.
We’ve been on many tours now that we actually recognized many of the machine used to make the wines, so we helped her out a bit and she appreciated that.
After the indoor tour was done, we asked if it was okay to walk outside amongst the vines. Emily said she thought that would be fine, but if someone gets mad, don’t mention her name. Sounds good to us. The Crow River Winery has four different vineyards located around the area. We were able to just see this one that is located at the winery and is called The Crow River Vineyard. The other three are called, The Box Elder, Henry, and Winter vineyard.
The crowning glory of all of the Hutchinson vineyards, the Crow River Winery adorns the East Hutchinson Minnesota grassland. This picturesque vineyard features 9 acres of Minnesota’s best cold-climate grapes as well as harvests of fruit, garlic, mushroom and potatoes for crafting into both traditional and unique wines.
It is always relaxing to sit out in the vineyards and just take it all in. This winery also hosts many weddings and other events and the day we were here, they had two weddings. I bet they have some gorgeous pictures in their wedding albums.
It was warm out, so this brought us back inside to start our tastings. After all, that’s why we’re here. Emily greeted us and shoved a few tables together and started taking our orders. We tasted five different wines, gave our opinions, had a little snack, then ordered dinner and of course, a glass of wine to go with it. They have a wonderful Bistro here, so we all ordered pizza’s and kept the evening going.
The vineyards have produced some wonderful grapes, and Crow River Winery has crafted those and other fruits into delicious wine varieties including Frontenac, Marquette, Honeycrisp Apple & Cranberry, Strawberry Rhubarb and their very own Black ‘Sota Wine. They also offer a selection of one-of-a-kind cooking wines to add flavor to your favorite dishes.
We couldn’t help sneaking around a bit to see where the weddings happen. Emily said we could go out onto the courtyard because the wedding hadn’t started yet and the other one was done. Yay, off we went! They have two reception rooms indoors in case of rain and a couple of settings outside where they also perform the ceremonies. This is a good idea so that they are covered no matter the weather.
We spent about five hours enjoying the day with our friends and having so much fun and so many laughs. It’s always my favorite thing we do each summer. So glad that our tradition continues and next summer….well, I’ve already got that one planned too. 🙂
